New Smoking Ban

Well I'm indeed surprised to read that smoking is allowed on the balconies! I just got off the Victoria and had a German neighbour whinge to guest relations every time I had a cigarette on the balcony (I can assure you I wasn't the only one who did)....which wasn't very often as I actually thought I wasn't allowed to and guest relations would in turn ring me.

Well....I wish I could turn back time to annoy her the way she annoyed me. There is much more to this story but another time.....perhaps a new thread, "The cruise neighbour from hell"

That would be a great thread to start!

You can be offended all you want but I FIRMLY stand by my comments. Individuals are responsible for their own health. This is one of the reasons our healthcare system is in such shambles. So many health problems could be prevented! If someone smokes for 30+ years and develops lung cancer...it is entirely their own fault. No one forced them to suck on white cancer sticks day in and day out. If someone eats and eats and eats until they blow up like a blimp and weigh 500lbs. and develop diabetes and heart disease, etc....it is THEIR fault. Some of us are not "perfect" but we do have the willpower to realize we are making unhealthy choices and take control to make changes for the better.

And for your information.....YES..... smokers are DRUG Addicts.... and the drug they are addicted to is called nicotine. That is a fact whether you like it or not.

It must be wonderful to be perfect and not enjoy anything remotely sinful.

I take it you are in good health and unlikely to admit to whatever medication you take whether it's for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc?

No, silly me, it's only smokers who suffer from these things isn't it?

Absolutely great. No smoking anywhere inside the ship except for the cigar lounge where the doors remained closed, keeping the smell contained. Some smoking allowed on defined outside deck areas and on cabin balconies. We had a balcony cabin in the spa and presumably amongst people who are heath conscious, did not suffer from smoke infiltration from neighbouring balcony owners at all.

The atmosphere inside the ship including the casino was SO Different. Every day there was a written reminder in the TODAY programme reminding guests of the new no smoking rules which were adhered to. The age range of clients on this three week trip was relatively mature so maybe that explains it. My husband had a good time too and is working hard at the gym to ensure he will enjoy the next trip.

We were on the Costa Serena earlier this month and were worried that smoke would be everywhere. We were delighted to find new rules in operation. No smoking inside apart from the Cigar Room (which we never found) and on deck smoking was only at specific points marked on the walls with an ashtray screwed to the wall and no tables or chairs there so the smokers just had to stand there and smoke their cigarette and then go - so no comfort while smoking. Amazingly this was pretty well adhered to - I only had to point out the smoking areas to 3 or 4 people during our trip and I also saw the crew doing this. This deck smoking policy is actually more stringent than many other lines due to the very small area where smoking is allowed around each smoking point. They do, unfortunately still allow smoking on balconies.

On my experience, all Costa cruises I have sailed on had the policy mentioned above. What I heard that is new is that the Cigar Bar/Lounge on Costa Fascinosa was closed while the ship was in South America. A pity as it was a very civilised place on board (and I am not a smoker but it was almost always empty, tranquil, where one could have a good conversation, great bar service, and not be annoyed by other pax rude behaviour. Ships became so enclosed spaces nowadays with so limited open spaces that one notices smoking far more now than one would 30 years ago, when most lounges could get fresh air
