Renting a car...advisable?

To all you Barbados experts...

 

We are headed to Barbados on our Quantum cruise in January. My group has 6 people so we would rent a van. Are Barbadian roads easy to navigate? None of us have been to the island before. I'd like to do an overall drive of the entire island. Stop at Carlisle Bay and swim out to the turtles...go over to the east coast to see Bathesba, etc.

 

Any advice on a route to take? Or is it easier to set up a tour and not do it on our own?
