You absolutely don't need a tour. Just take the ferry from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook and take a taxi when you reach St. John to the beaches. If you are worried about time on the way back you can take a water taxi. You can get the specifics in the Ports of Call forum.

I agree. No need for a tour. Here is what we did in Jan 2013:

 

Taxi from cruise dock to Red Hook

Ferry to St. John

Taxi tour of St. John (including Annaburg Plantation)

3 hours at Trunk Bay

Taxi to Cruz Bay

Lunch at Barefoot Cowboy (pulled pork sliders and rum snowcones) :)

Ferry back to Red Hook

Taxi to cruise dock

 

Wonderful, delightful, and easy day!
