3418ahl Posted August 31, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Can someone tell me how far out of town the dock in Malacca is? Trying to decide what to do in this port.

3418ahl Posted September 1, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted September 1, 2014 Thanks, but what I am looking for is the travel time from where the ship docks to the main town.

adoctor Posted September 2, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 2, 2014 Last year this was a tender port and the ship(odyssey) anchored offshore. Transfer time was about 10 minutes. The landing point on the river was within walking distance of the centre but a bus was also provided. Its a great city and should not be missed.British,Portugese,Dutch,Indian and Chinese influences . Hire a trishaw, agree price/time first but an hour is good time for orientation. Guide on the ship will give you going rate but tends to be higher when a cruise ship is in town. Shopping in China town is good usual rules re haggling apply. Best port(along with Port Blair) on last years cruise. So my advice don't "overplan" just do the city on your own. Enjoy! 3418ahl Posted September 2, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted September 2, 2014 Great, this answers everything. The only tour offered that interested us was in the town, and we would much rather do it ourselves at leisure. Did you find it easy to purchase Malaysian currency somewhere for the trishaw and shopping?
adoctor Posted September 2, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 2, 2014 You can change money on the ship but the rate is not great. Our Trishaw operator was quite happy to accept US $ but not sure if this is normal practise. Plenty of banks and Bureau de change in the city.
