Kaz53 Posted January 17, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 17, 2015 Hi, Anyone done the Northern lights Tour? Can you wait to book on board so as to see weather forecast? Are they worth the money? On Oriana in March.
BORDER REIVER Posted January 17, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 17, 2015 We cruised with Hurtigruten from 27th Feb to 11th March last year and only saw the lights on 2 occasions, both on the same night (8.45pm & 11.45pm), on 4th March. That was in the far North near Batsfjord. Despite us only seeing them on one night out of eleven, some friends of ours did a 6 night cruise at around the same time of year and saw the Northern Lights 5 nights out of the six. It's all down to luck really. The lights displays lasted around 10 minutes on the first occasion and over half an hour on the second occasion. The ships crew switched off most of the upper deck lights to help us see them better. The Aurora are well worth seeing and quite mesmerizing as they arc across the sky, but they aren't as bright as when photographed with a digital camera. silver surfer 2010 Posted January 17, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 17, 2015 Fantastic photo's If you wait until you are on Board you will risk the possibility of the tours being sold out. We did the cruise last March and had a superb cruise - even if we hadn't seen the lights the scenery was well worth the trip David E
Huddy Newby Posted January 18, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 18, 2015 Seeing the lights is very weather dependant. On a land based holiday in Tromso we went out 2 nights on the trot, it was snowing a blizzard both nights as we left Tromso and we're driven in land , on the first night for about 2 hours before we saw them. On the second night we finished up on the Finnish border the weather cleared for about half an hour then closed in again. We got back to the hotel about 3 am. That was in March 2013. Would we go searching again for the Northern Lights? Most definitely YES. Sent from my SM-P900 using Forums mobile app
