happy_travellers Posted August 11, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 11, 2015 We are going to drive from Venice to Piran, Croatia for 3 nights post cruise then return to Venice to fly home. Any suggestions on Car rental in Venice? Any suggestions on sites to see on the way or once we are in Piran. We would love "hill top" towns, wineries and scenery. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. We have booked Hotel Piran. Thanks
happy_travellers Posted August 11, 2015 Author #2 Share Posted August 11, 2015 Hi Does anyone have recent experience renting a car in Venice and driving to Slovenia? I am contacting rental companies to see the particulars. If anyone has recent experience please share. Thanks
kdooley Posted August 12, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 12, 2015 I have never driven to Slovenia or Croatia from Italy but wanted to mention a few things: Car rentals should be available at the Venice Airport. We have used Hertz several times in Italy with no problems. Check with rental agency about driving the car in these two countries. They may have rules that you won't know about until you get to the border. Get an International Drivers license before you go, $12 or so at any AAA Travel office (plus photo). Hopefully someone else will give specific information for your trips!
happy_travellers Posted August 12, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted August 12, 2015 My TA contacted Hertz and I contacted Avis. Hertz wants a minimum 3 day rental. This is the reply from Avis. Thank you for contacting Avis Customer Care regarding international travel. We where not able to locate an Avis branch in Piazza Roma, however for rentals originating at our Venice Marco Polo Airport branch, vehicles rented from Italy may not be driven into Eastern Europe, C.I.S., Baltic States, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Malta, Turkey, or any countries outside Europe, including Africa and Middle East. You may however drive to Slovenia, Croatia, and Czech Republic. You may drive to Slovenia, but you can only rent an Economy Manual, Compact Manual, Compact Wagon Manual, Intermediate Manual, Standard Automatic, Standard Van Manual, and Full Size Van Manual. An additional charge of 35.00 EUR per rental will apply. The Blue Stamp must be put on the front window of the vehicle and can be bought at the entry to Slovenia, in tobacco shops, gas stations and newspaper stands. In case of no stamp in the window fines range between 300.00 EUR to 800.00 EUR. In order to ensure you are getting the correct information for the location you plan to pick up at, please access the website http://www.avis.com and then click on Locations. Then select your location. Once there, scroll down to Location Terms & Conditions, and then Travel Into Other Countries. This info makes me comfortable going ahead with our plans to drive from Venice to Piran and explore into Croatia. Hope this info might help someone else also. Keel Haul Posted August 17, 2015 #5 Share Posted August 17, 2015 I have used Sixt car hire recently, they are very good and about 25% cheaper than Avis. Keel Haul Posted August 18, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 18, 2015 No Trieste, if you are American check if your credit card provides car hire insurance. If not take out independent CDW excess insurance. Where are you visiting in Croatia?
