miketeri Posted October 6, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2005 Flying SW to San Diego from the East Coast for a 10 day cruise and was cuious how strict SW Air is about the 62 inch restriction and the weight question of 70 lbs or 50lbs. Would prefer to use the 32 inch luggage rather than 2 26 or 28's but how fussy are they with luggage that exceeds the 62 inch rule. Would it matter or help if the weight for the luggage was 50 lbs or less for this size? Secondly, my email ticket purchase suggests 70lb max per luggage peice, yet at the airport I hear the weight limit is 50 lbs. What is reality here? And in addressing the above 2 questions alone or in conjuction with each other, I have been told any problems that might result in an extra charge (how much??) is decided by the mood of the person checking in the luggage. Does this mean the guy here in the East in a good mood will let my luggage thru and the grumpy guy in San Diego will wack me with extra charge? Any thoughts or advice....leaving onm the 15th! pd933 Posted October 7, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2005 I recently flew SWA from Chicago to Portland and the e-mail received from SWA had the following message on it: Important: ******************* FREE BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE ********** Checked Baggage Allowance: Three (3) pieces of baggage, each piece of which having outside measurements (i.e., the sum of the greatest outside length plus the greatest outside width plus the greatest outside height) not exceeding sixty-two (62) inches, not weighing more than fifty (50) pounds per piece, and provided such baggage is checked for carriage in the cargo hold of the aircraft. Baggage that exceeds these limits is subject to an additional charge. Carryon Baggage Allowance: One (1) item of carryon baggage that does not exceed external dimensions of ten inches by sixteen inches by twenty-four inches (10 x 16 x 24) plus one (1) smaller personal-type item (e.g., purse, briefcase, laptop computer case, backpack, small camera), provided that such items are capable of being carried onboard the aircraft by one person without additional assistance and are capable of being stowed under a seat or in an overhead compartment. Also I was charged $20 by ATA for an overweight bag and the luggage clause was very similar to Southwest. Hope this helps.
miketeri Posted October 11, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted October 11, 2005 Thanks for the reply. Was told that if the luggage exceeds the 62 inches and does not weigh more than 50 lbs and the SWA person is in a good mood, that they will let me thru without a hassle. Not very encouraging!
