We are renting a van and driving to the Cape Liberty Port in New Jersey. We wanted to know where we should stay pre cruise? There are 6 of us. We will be returning the van when we get to New Jersey and then picking up another van for the trip home, so we will not need parking. Is the Newark airport area the closet place to stay?

What is your exact date? How many hotel rooms and budget/room? How do you plan to get to Cape Liberty? What company are you renting from?

Port transportation is pricey - figure a minimum of $35/pp round trip. For certain hotels/car rental locations, accessible public transit plus local cab is an option - $2.25/pp on the light rail plus local cab/Van - probably under $30 for 6 people, but that would have to be researched.

Post back with more details.

There are 6 of us driving from Pittsburgh in a rental van on September 17th. We will probably get in around 2 or 3 p.m. Jersey City looks like a nice area to spend the afternoon and evening hours, but the Newark airport area would do too. We would eat dinner and then have a light breakfast before the cruise. We need 3 rooms with about a $200-250 budget. I know we will be able to drop off the van at the airport, but not sure if we could do it somewhere closer to Jersey City. Not sure they will then drive us that far from the airport. Then we are reserving a van for the trip home. Again I need to research where we would do this near the port or the airport.

Any info for the above statements would be great. We are all seniors and AAA members.

Would it be $35 pp from Newark area or Jersey City area? We thought we would take a minivan cab for 6 people or 2 cabs with 3 people each in them.

Definitely check out Jersey City. There are car rental places in the Newport area which would be close to the hotels. Look at the Doubletree, Courtyard, and Candlewood Suites. Definitely a much nicer area than EWR, but it doesn't always work for folks logistically. However, it would work well for you if the rental car arrangement to drop off in Jersey City can be made. Coming back you can book from EWR.

You should be booking a car service, which is about the same price as a cab (cabs between these NJ towns charge fixed rates instead of being metered. For two cars expect to spend $55-65/car from either EWR or Jersey City to the port. Basically it's about $45/pp round trip.

The $35 transportation quote is for booking the cruise package at Country Inns where they add $70 to the basic room rate for 2 and call it a "cruise package". This is some sort of bus that you have to sign up for at the hotel.
