From Port Limon to Cahuita, Costa Rica

My husband and I will be stoping at Puerto Limon on our 1/13/06 Brilliance of the Seas cruise. His daughter has purchased some property in Cahuita, Costa Rica, and we would like to visit the town on our day in Costa Rica.

Cahuita is about 24 miles SE of Puerto Limon on the coast. What would be the best way to visit the area? Should we rent a car and drive (is this even possible at the port?) or negotiate with a taxi driver when we get off the ship? Is there a bus that runs between the towns?

We also understand that there is a National Park near Cahuita and that it is near a Panamanian border crossing. Are either of these two "excursions" worth a visit, time permitting?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Dear cool cruisers Cauhita is perhaps our favorite CR beach - small very laid back town - national park with its monkeys, sloths, birds etc. When we docked at Limon on a cruise a couple of years ago, we boarded a local bus and went to/from Cahuita. We have been retired in Costa Rica for 20 plus years and don't necessarily recommend this for tourists as you would first need to exchange dollars to colones etc. - your best bet would probably be to negotiate with a taxi driver. Kelly creek Inn is a small hotel restaurant at the very entrance to the national park - near the bus stop - center of activity. Run by a European couple - good place to dine. Although Cahuita is a considerable distance from the Panama border, there is a check point between Cahuita and Limon - mostly checking for contraband brought in from Panama. This should pose no problem if you present the ship ID card and appropriate travel documents Costa Rica Couple

we are travelling to puerto limon with our cruise march 2006 ...cahuita national park also interests us ....i have found out through www.frommers.com that the local bus leaves from limon to cahuita/puerto viejo every hour from 5am to 6pm , stop located at av4 near the rodeocasino buiding 1 block north of municipal market .....(at a cost of about $0.70 ) ...i would love to do this and then visit the village , wonder the park , find the beach , and travel back the same way ...only think i'm a wee bit nervous about getting stuck , lost, miss the bus , whatever , not get back to the right spot at the right time ....alternative www.oregontourscr.org offer a tour to the park that we are considering ...we visited costa rica two years ago on a land holiday (pacific side) and experienced river boat tour with wild life+++ , zip lines and spa visit with lots of excitement and even had the opportunity to see the leatherback turtle lay her eggs ....costa rica is awesome ....can't wait to visit again...enjoy ...m
