Alaska Land+Cruise Tour (Y3L) - luggage weight restriction

I'm on Holland America's Land+Cruise tour (Y3L) going to the Yukon, doing the land portion first, which includes a flight from Fairbanks to Dawson City. Reading through my express docs and the Tour Tips document about luggage and packing, it says that I'm allowed two checked bags for that flight but the total combined weight of those two bags can't be more than 50 lbs. And then my carry-on has to be less than 13 lbs. My TA says that overweight charges are "excessive" and it's best to keep it under 50 lbs. I'm trying hard not to overpack but it's possible it's going to be close on the weight, even with maxing out the carry-on.

Does anyone have experience with this flight? How strict are they at the airport on the luggage weight? How excessive are the overweight fees? I do plan to bring a luggage scale to help when I'm packing for that leg of the trip.
