Carthage

The ruins take either a skilled guide or a certain amount of imagination...or both. The Bardo Museum is wonderful and chock full of great stuff. Given the chance, I'd also recommend a sortie to Sidi Bou Said, lovely hillside suburb with tree-lined streets and cafes for mint tea--also arts and crafts.

I would not say at all that the ruins in Carthage are non-existent. It certainly is not like Pompeii but very interesting nevertheless--we wandered around in there for about an hour last fall (although you do need to have a guide to tell you what you are looking at).

The Bardo was a spectacular surprise. Almost every room was stunning, with huge detailed mosaics and other items that you don't see anyplace else.

And, yes I agree with Bgood about Sidi Bin Said--a very pleasant place to spend an hour and do some shopping. Some might say that it is a little touristy because it looks almost picture perfect and you feel very safe and protected there, but a very pleasant stop in between Carthage and Bardo.

In fact, that is what our tour consisted of last fall: over a five hour period, we first went to Carthage, then to Sidi Bin Said and then to Bardo--and loved every minute of it.
