4/21 Rome-re: getting to ship

Hire a van/driver/guide for your entire stay. He can pick you up at the airport, take you on a driving tour during the days you're in Rome, and drive you to the port on the morning of your cruise. You can ask him to do it all for one (negotiated) price.

We did that on one of our recent cruises and found it simplified things SO much for us. See Paolo's website at www.drivinguide.com - he has some great advice in booking these "combined tours." And if the four of you divide the costs, you might find the price cheaper than booking the ship's own tours and transfers!

The train from the Termini Station in Rome takes a little more than an hour to the port of Civitaveccia and the cost is 8 to 10 dollars each. They leave about every hour. You can check the schedules Google:rolleyes: Italy trains

The Trenitalia site is http://www.trenitalia.it/. Some reviews and advice are located on Virtual Tourist. Finding the right train can be an adventure, especially if you're not familiar with navigating your way through a crowded city train station (think Grand Central Terminal) with signage and announcements in Italian. And some have claimed that the trains haven't run on time since Mussolini left office! :D In addition, the train station is a good distance from the pier (just over a mile), and it'll seem even longer if you're dragging enough luggage to last for your 14-day cruise. Trenitalia does provide a shuttle bus between the train station and the harbor, but it's more geared for passengers using the Italian ferry than for cruise ship passengers.
