Communicating with cruise group on Mardi Gras

Cruising with two other couples on Mardi Gras this month. Do we need to purchase internet access to communicate (text) or is that type of communication a function of the Hub app? It's important if we want to communicate our location or how long the line is at the roller coaster or whatever. Thanks for the response!

We had 5 family members on Mardi Gras last week and purchased the chat feature.  It's better than nothing but definitely not as good as regular texting.  Notifications didn't work for us and some messages come hours after they are sent.
