Flam railway excursion availability

We are docking in Eidefjord.  So no chance to walk to flam railway!  Don’t think I want to rent a car either.  Will either win excursion lottery or do NiN out of Bergen just the two of us.  So much cheaper out of Bergen we will have extra $ for later in cruise.  I am still curious about our chances of booking in DV, when  we are allowed 67 days out?

If you have the opportunity to take a NIN out of Bergen, I would highly recommend doing so.  My husband and I did that last year, and it was one of the main highlights of our trip.  We were on a back-to-back Viking Homelands-British Isles Explorer cruise, so we were docked in Bergen for three nights and had a full day to do the NIN.  I am a huge rail fan and was mostly looking forward to the Flam railway.  As it turned out, my favorite part of the NIN was the cruise on Nærøyfjord.

I just finished updating my blog about the trip in case you'd like to read about our experience.  If you decide to go this way, just make sure you get on the right bus after the fjord cruise!

I'm curious why you decided to do the loop in this direction rather than catching the bus in Voss and taking the boat to Flam?

Always love stories of locals that go out of their way to help bewildered tourists.  Had similar experience in St. Petersburg.  Young lady walked us to our hotel when only asked which bus stop was closest.  Then she went back to bus stop to continue her journey.  Ten minute walk out of her way.  When I can, I try to pay it back here in states.

Was yours a Viking excursion?  I have not seen anything offering a bus one way and train the other.  that sounds like something I would like to do.  We are booked on Icelands Majestic Landscapes in July.  I am afraid the train will be packed with tourists at that time of year.  Thanks for any info you can provide.

We are on your trip July 16 out of Bergen.  We are going to try for the 1/2 day train in Flam port. And do the included one too in the morning.  Train is afternoon as well, which if there is fog, it will be gone in the afternoon ,  just guessing on that.

We thought it would be more scenic going down the mountain from Myrdal to Flam on the Flam Railway. If you go in this direction, just make sure to catch the right bus in Gundvangen (see blog post NIN IV)!

Great.  I was beginning to think we would be sailing with only a handful of passengers. Our rollcall is strangely quiet although I have seen we will have a lot of Aussies on ours trying to get us to eat vegimit.:) 😀  What other excursions are you looking at? I definitely want the train.

We're on that cruise also.  Just not much of a joiner. I think there will be more than a handful of passengers since the cruise has been sold out for months.  Planning to book our own nutshell route on the 15th.
