Passports needed for Colon port day visit

This is uncommon, but we'll give it a try.  There are at least three police officers in the pier side mall which seems safe enough.

While calling in Panama as a port call your are considered in transit and not "officially" entering the country.  Just a driver's license and your ship ID us sufficient.  The mall area where the ship is docked is safe, just don't venture beyond that unless you are with a tour or in a cab.  Going through Colon via a tour is not inherently unsafe, it is just not a DIY stop.

Today in Colon passports were required per the ship PA briefing.  Passengers were waved through, crew were checked.   

 

The immediate port area felt very safe.  There were lots and lots of police.   There seem to be two cruise docks.  Ours was at a large open mall, with some nice shops open.  The second dock was by the Radisson Casino, with more shops.  We found US pricing and a good selection on electronics, rare in the region.

 

The Super 99 was a grocery/mini Wal Mart.  No obvious lunch places.
