Alaska...Summit...Best time to go?

We did our Alaska cruise the end of August. It was the beginning of their rainy season I think. It was a good time to go for buying things, getting toward the end of the cruise season so lots on sale, but I think not as good weather.

I've heard May is a great time to go, weather apt to be more sunny, and not as expensive (cruise prices) as later in the summer.

Other folks with more experience will be answering you too I bet.

Alaska is beautiful, hope you have a wonderful cruise.

We did a 13 day cruise/tour this past May and it was fabulous. It was dreary, cold and snowing the day we arrived (did the land first). Two days later is was in the 70's and clear as a bell. We had one day (around mid trip - in Seward) when it was in the 80's and hot, but otherwise the weather was perfect. In May the bears are just coming out of hybernation, and the mountain goats are just having their young so we got to see lots of wildlife, especially the little ones. The mountain tops were covered with snow and there were lots of waterfalls. Alaska is a lot less crowded and expensive in May so less competition for excursions. Have a wonderful time!

Planning to go on the Summit to Alaska 2007..we were thinking of May 12th but have heard this may not be the best time.

Peace, Anna:)

We've been once in May and once in July. Strangely but in the year we went only Alaska had nice weather in May. The whole coast south of Vancouver was cool and rainy. Our July trip was much cooler than in May. Weather changes constantly and the reverse might hold true the following year. But remember, when you get close to the glacier,.... well it's ice.

We have been twice to Alaska, once early June and then September. The June one was by far the best, the snow is crisp and white, in September it is brown and slushy.

Enjoy yourselves whenever you go.

We have sailed Alaska five cruises. Two in May and three in August/September.

We prefer May due to better, more sunny weather on May cruises. Also the daylight hours are longer, allowing more sightseeing and excursion time.

As Drew said, the May repo cruise is a good value and gives you two destinations in one cruise, west coast and Alaska.

Enjoy Alaska,

May can be hit and miss like any other time actually. but..there is less chance of Fog early in the cruise year than later.

Been twice early May (this yr actually) and Early June. both times just fine except for one day.

Thank you everyone for your advice/suggestions. It looks like May will be best. And our daughter will be able to go as she will be finished her first year of university by May. Take care and thanks again.

Peace, Anna:)
