Stingray sandbar versus Stingray city?

Hi everyone,

 

For those of you who have done both, would you recommend visiting Stingray City or Stingray Sandbar as the best place to "hang with the rays"? I notice tours that go to both places and was wondering which one was better...water depth is no issue for us.

I have done Stingray City in Grand Cayman, where the water is about 12 feet deep. It was fantastic! We actually got to glide around under water with the rays. I've only seen pictures of the sandbar location, but it always looks overly crowded and the water is only about 4 feet deep. If the deeper water won't bother you I would definitely go for Stingray City!

We went to the Sandbar. Yes, it was crowded, but our particular boat wasn't. Probably because there were so many boats, we were a little deeper than 4 foot. There were times I couldn't reach. I'm 5'8". But, most of the time I could. The thing I liked about the sandbar was our instructor would bring the rays to us and we fed them with squid. We held them, caressed them, and felt them swim up against our legs. I don't know how close of an encounter you can get in deeper waters.

We did stingray city and really enjoyed it. I didn't know there was a stingray sandbar.

I was under the impression the two are the same thing. When we went with Capt. Bryan we went to stingray city but it was just a big sandbar.

The sandbar is where you can reach, the city is a little farther out and you can't reach. But, very close to each other.

Sting Ray City is the original. It is a 12 ft dive and absolutely fantastic. The sandbar cam later and it is very crowded and fine if you don't dive. If you are certified...DO THE DIVE
