grace5 Posted May 22, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2007 I am looking to get together a group of solo/single cruisers from the Sacramento/Roseville area. Thought we could meet periodically and discuss our experiences and future plans. Personally have done a lot of cruises in the past but none alone. It will be a new experience for me. Anyone interested in participating??????
Moondawgie Posted May 23, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2007 I would, but I'm closer to Reno. Sacramento is too far. Good luck.
grace5 Posted May 24, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted May 24, 2007 Moondawggie: Too bad you are that far away. Actually a trip to Roseville doesn't take that long when you look at doing it only once every 4-6 weeks. Enjoy your cruising.
grace5 Posted June 14, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted June 14, 2007 Doesn't seem like there is any interest in my idea. Too bad, it could have been a fun way to exchange experiences and get to know fellow cruisers.
west coast cruiser Posted June 29, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 29, 2007 I hope you don't give up on this thread. I am a solo cruiser from Sacramento. I just saw this thread. I was widowed 5 years ago and still cruise. I think this is a great idea. Let's see if we can get some more people interested. It would be fun to get a group together WCC
grace5 Posted June 29, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted June 29, 2007 WCC: Yes, I was beginning to think the idea was a bust. But it is certainly nice to hear from someone right in the area. If we can now just find a another couple of people, we can plan to get together. Right now I am busy getting things arranged for a cruise on the Golden Princess in August. Yesterday got a great deal from my TA - at least $600 off the current Princess price and that of the online sites. I look forward to hearing from you again. bob111 Posted June 29, 2007 #7 Share Posted June 29, 2007 I agree, don't give up on your idea. I'm in Santa Rosa and would even consider driving over for the gathering. My wife died last year and and I am not planning to give up on cruising. Over the years of cruisng, about 50, we had many solo cruisers at our table and they all seemed to have a good time. (Note, I meant 50 cruises, not 50 years of cruising as first cruise was in 1982.) I think with the big increase in cabin numbers, the cruise lines will see the value of going after the single cruiser. The posting and referral to RCCl website and single suplements as low 125% is a good sign that this may start sooner than later. I haven't been a solo cruiser yet but soon, I hope. Annieeee Posted June 29, 2007 #8 Share Posted June 29, 2007 Grace, I live far, far away, on the other coast. But don't give up. Maybe you could get a a good size group that is willing to meet via an online chat just to talk about our future cruise plans. The single supplement is a real deterrent to solo, not necessarily just single cruisers. I just wish more would come forward and post. west coast cruiser Posted June 29, 2007 #9 Share Posted June 29, 2007 Well, maybe we can get this going after all. I have a friend that I have taken several cruises with. We each had our own cabins and paid the single supplement. I went on a cruise over to Hawaii and back last year totally solo. I met several people on cruise critic before we left and we got together every day on the ship. I never felt alone. I met two of the women I met on the Hawaii cruise in February for a Caribbean Cruise.I am ready now to take many more cruises solo. Let's keep this thread going and hopefully we can have a get together. We could even meet halfway between Sacramento and Santa Rosa. Also, an online chat would be great. I think we have the beginnings of a nice "Solo Cruising Club". WCC WCC
bob111 Posted June 30, 2007 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2007 I have searched Princess web site for the Golden sailing in August. Looking at prices 200% for single supplement. I would like to continue sailing on Princess but have yet to get a decent single supplement. I have sailed on 18 princess cruises and would like to continue to receive the Elite level perks. What is the date of your sailing? We now have direct air service, Santa Rosa to Seattle, and it would be easy to get to Seattle. It is probably against the rules to mention a travel agency so I'm wonseing if you can send private mail using this site. Heck, here's my email, this will work. bob95409@sbcglobal.net. Thanks for the help. Bob
west coast cruiser Posted July 1, 2007 #11 Share Posted July 1, 2007 Grace, It does sound like you have a good travel agent who finds deals for you. When in August is your cruise and where are you going? WCC
LoveThisCruisingThing Posted July 8, 2007 #12 Share Posted July 8, 2007 Grace I would be interested. I am in Sacramento and going on my second solo cruise in a couple of weeks. Most of my trips have been solo due to vacation being in the summer. Please keep me in mind when you arrange something. Grace (also)
grace5 Posted July 8, 2007 Author #13 Share Posted July 8, 2007 A BIG WELCOME to LoveThisCruisingThing (and another Grace). Nice to have another join in. Is your cruise on the Dawn with an escorted group??? If so, I am very familiar with your travel company. We will definitely keep you posted on things. However, it may be a while before I can put something together. Wednesday, I am going to Sea Ranch for a week. Then the following Saturday, I am off to Colorado with my GD for a week. I then get to spend a couple of weeks at home before heading off to Seattle for my Alaskan cruise on the Golden Princess on August 18th. After that, hopefully we will have a lot more folks joining in and we can plan something more formal. I did my first solo last April. But it probably wasn't a true solo as I had other family members along. But it was my first without a spouse. For August a friend has agreed to go along and share the cabin. I have cruises scheduled for February and March but again those are with friends or family even though I currently have single cabins booked. After that I have no idea about where to cruise. I just know I need to go on one every 3-4 months or I start having withdrawal symptoms. bob111, hope you had some luck finding a cruise. I will be visiting your area Wednesday night and Sunday night as I will be staying with my daughter and her kids. They just moved into their new Santa Rosa home this week. For anyone interested. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a good deal on the European Holday Markets and Christmas & New year's river cruises with single supplements from 25%. Was really tempted, but have too much going on then. LoveThisCruisingThing Posted July 9, 2007 #14 Share Posted July 9, 2007 Hi Grace and others My cruise is 7/20 to Alaska on the Dawn Princess and not with a group. Although I know there are others going according to our roll call. I went RT to Alaska last August on the Dawn but through Seattle (family in the area). I am really looking forward to going again this year. Didn't think I would be going so soon but Princess made me a good offer. The next two weeks are so busy with appts and getting my cat to my parents so they can catsit for me. Then going back to my parents to pick her up. So after your trip for a potential get together would be good for me also. Amazing how fast summer flies (I am a teacher and never get used to that LOL). Hope everyone enjoys their cruises they have planned. So nice to find a solo group here in the Sacramento area.
west coast cruiser Posted July 9, 2007 #15 Share Posted July 9, 2007 Welsome Grace, I was afraid this thread was going to die down. I am looking forward to a get together with all of you later this summer. Have fun on your cruise Grace # 1. I did Alaska on the Coral Princess a year ago. We did an 8 day land and 7 day on the ship. I went with two friends but I was solo in my cabin. I am looking at Tahiti or New Zealand and Australia for my next cruise and it will be solo. Looking forward to meeting all of you. grace5 Posted July 9, 2007 Author #16 Share Posted July 9, 2007 Just to keep everyone advised on the European Holiday Markets and Christmas & New year's river cruises. The single supplements are now ZERO. Wish I had time to go. WCC, my February cruise is Tahiti. Got a great deal on a mini when I first booked it over a year ago. But now as a solo, it is starting to look pretty expensive. May have to consider changing category. But the scenery is so beautiful there for all days of the cruise that I hate giving up the balcony. I know that I used it a lot the last time I did Tahiti. LoveThisCruisingThing, Yes teaching can definitely limit your options for cruising. What grade(s)???? bob111 Posted July 14, 2007 #19 Share Posted July 14, 2007 I rec'ed, probably same email, on "no single supplement". It was either from Vantage or Viking tours. Did the Christmas markets about three years ago. Some were really good with locally made products, however, many had "junk made in China" and my guess is that many of the booths were owned by the same company and having a booth in many of the different towns. We did enjoy the markets but bought very little. Weather was a little cold but not bad. Also did a 14 day cruise from Tahiti, bora Bora. Morea and on to Hawaaii. Cruise cost was $599. per and air from LA to Tahiti and home from Honolulu was only $200. Chartered planes by Princess were overbooked so Princess offered to sail the passengers that came from Hawaaii back to Hawaaii, 14 days at no cost and also those due to depart in Honolulu, they offered to sail them across the Pacific to Ensanada at no charge. Some of the passengers got a 33 day cruise for the original 14 day purchase. Many cruise stories to share so I hope this gathering will take place. Bob

grace5 Posted September 8, 2007 Author #21 Share Posted September 8, 2007 Yes, I am still interested. So keep me in mind if you hear anything. Just got back from my Alaska cruise and have been helping my daughter with her kitchen remodel. So haven't had much time for monitoring the forums. LoveThisCruisingThing Posted September 12, 2007 #25 Share Posted September 12, 2007 Hello WCC Yep it does look like it is up to us. I live in Sacramento. I can meet either early evenings/late afternoons/weekends. A coffee place would be best I think. I don't mind traveling to Roseville. Any ideas?
