4X4 vs car in Skagway

Two couples traveling together will be in port the first of June. We are having a hard time making a decision on what would be the best way to see the beautiful country from Skagway to Emerald Lake.....take the 4X4 excursion or rent a car. Please give us some input...pros and cons.

Thanks

There are 2 4x4 excursions out of Skagway, both of them with Montana Mountain at Carcross as the destination. The self-drive Jeep one stays down below the treeline, to a location where many people take their cars. The one that Frontier Excursions does uses big SUVs with driver/guides and goes several miles further, up a real 4x4 road into the high country, to just about this location: http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/images/montanamtn1.html . Wildlife viewing oportunities are minimal on either trip (there's just too much ATV/4x4 traffic on the mountain now and the animals have gone around to the far side of the mountain (which is where I go icon_smile.gif ). On either tour, though, probably 90% of the day is spent on paved roads that you can see with a rental car.

Hello

If you want to be upset take the 4x4 tour. If you want to enjoy your day and have fun rent a car and come on up to the yukon.

Stop by Carcross and say hello at the cabin across the train bridge. There is lots to see on the way up. Go to www.explorenorth.com this is the guy next door Murray. His sight will really make you rent the car. Mile post from Skagway to Emerald lake is great.
