Kiwi Kruzer Posted July 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 14, 2007 Here is a link to the proposed new Cruise / Military Terminal at Townsville. http://www.citypac.com.au/property_development/projects/townsville_ocean_terminal Do you think cruise lines ,like P&O, will use it with Cairns being so close? What advantages do you see for tours from Townsville as opposed to Cairns? From the plan it looks like the cruise berth is recessed.Would it not be better to open it up to cater for bigger ships in thr future?

I think that a bit of extra variety is a good thing. Can't see both ports being used in the same cruise too much though. I see the tours as being different to suit local attractions, such as Maggie Island, Castle Hill lookout, Jupiters etc Not sure about making it bigger later, it would need to be bigger when it is built. Appears that they have not fully considered the size of large cruiseships. In proposing a project like this, you would want to attract as many ships as possible. The last paragraph of their press release seems to confirm that. Pacific Sun & Pacific Dawn will fit. Princess ships do not fit - (Sun, Dawn, Emerald, Golden Princess). Other visiting ships from RCCL & HAL will not fit either - (Rhapsody of the Seas, Mercury). Cheers,
Star-Man Posted July 14, 2007 #3 Share Posted July 14, 2007 Well it may not be big enough, but they are certainly going to put in a better position than the brisbane one. I swear, Portside was built in the most stupidest place.
howsthis Posted July 14, 2007 #4 Share Posted July 14, 2007 I don't think there is much difference in the distance between Cairns and Port Douglas where P & O now call, compared to Cairns and Townsville , so I wouldn't be surprised if P & O decide to add Townsville to their stops. I like Townsville better than Cairns or Port Douglas anyway so maybe I am biased.
