digital cameras

My husband bought a digital camera online before we went. When we were on Serenade (San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Antigua, Barbados) in February we checked several shops to see if he got a good price. ALL the shops were HIGHER and some as much as $250 higher. We bought a Canon (Elura 50) mini ( fits in the palm of your hand) digital video camera but I figure the digital cameras will be higher, too.

Plus, if you get one here before you go, you will have more time to practice and learn all the features before you vacation.

Have a great cruise.

I agree with Staylor. Digital cameras can be confusing. Plus, who knows if ther people in the shops can explain the use of the camera or make sure that you have everything you need. For example, the media cards that come with them hardly hold any pictures, you want to make sure that you have extra. They also go through batteries pretty quick so you want to have extras of them too. My recomendation is to go to a reliable camera store before you go so there is no chance of missing any great shots.

The one thing to remember about buying a digital camera - the higher the pixel rating (3 megapixels, 4 megapixels, etc.) the better quality the photos will be. On the downside, the higher the pixels, the more room each photo takes up on the memory card. As for batteries, I would recommend getting a camera that can use a lithium battery (SONY has some, not sure who else does). These are rechargeable batteries like the ones used in camcorders (but smaller) and they last longer than a regular battery.

As for the best deals... try Yahoo! shopping. Just do a search for the particular camera you want and it should bring up a list of stores and prices.

Hi guys ...

Buy your camera before you leave the US. For some reasons the "camera shops" in the Caribbean are still stuck in the film age. Part of the reason is that old-fashioned technology is still duty-free while digital stuff in lots of places is not yet. Here in Nassau they are theoretically duty-free but I find the selection is thin and the prices are high.

My recommendation: go to http://www.steves-digicams.com for reviews. This is the best spot I know online for essentially unbiased opinions and his online examples of actually pictures taken - most of them of the same subjects - gives a great basis for comparison. Then I'd go to www.mysimon.com and plug in the model you want and see who has it in stock at the best price. I have used Harmony Computers several times - bought two digital cameras and a Palm 505 from them. Absolutely no complaints and they didn't even pressure me to buy accessories the way some places do.

Take your camera along, don't wait to buy one on the way!
