Preventing lost luggage

Do you think there's a greater chance of having your luggage make it to your final destination (if you have a connecting flight) if you check it clear through, or if you check it to each intermediate point? Do they even allow you to do that? We're flying Pittsburgh to LGA New York to Miami, leaving Pittsburgh at 5:00 PM on a Friday. We have a 2 hr layover in NY. I'm not one who would do well if my luggage got lost!

I wouldn't chance claiming your luggage at LGA because that mean you'd need to:

- wait for the luggage to come out

- drag it back upstair and recheck it

- reclear security

With a 2-hour layover you'd be cutting it close!!!! Plus I'm not sure the airline will even allow that as they could interpret it as a way for you to not use your entire ticket as planned and that's a big no-no in the airline's view.

Here's some tips for preventing lost luggage:

- make sure the bags are tagged correctly (i.e. in your case the final destination should be MIA with the transfter city of LGA)

- make sure there are no other tags on the bags (put your cruise tags on after claiming your bags in Miami)

- cross pack clothes if possible. That way if a bag is delayed you'd only be missing a portion of your clothes rather than everything.
