Pearl Harbor

We'll be flying into HNL on Friday. We get in around 11:30am and were thinking about going straight to Pearl Harbor to see the Arizona. I've read a lot about how quickly tickets can get snatched up. Any thoughts on our chances?

Well, I would say it might be worth a shot but it will be slim that you get tix. Its only open til about 3 or 3:30....by the time you get your baggage and rental car and over there it will be close to 1.
Pearl Harbor is only about 10 minutes from the airport if that. It would be worth it for you to check to see if you can get tickets because you will be only 10 minutes out of your way if its sold out.
Please make sure to get a sedan and have all luggage in the trunk. You are not allowed to take any kind of bag into the memorial area (purses, camera bags, anything). Theives know this and are looking for a misstep on a tourists part.
Have fun and welcome!

Thanks. Is crime there really that bad? I would hope that the NPS would consider some security in the parking lot if car break ins are that frequent.

Yes, I am sure that they have considered some measures, but thieves are quick....especially when you leave things in view, and the parking lot isnt all that small.
I know that the newspapers just had an article on sunday about a couple of the worst locations (Pali Lookout and a park near the north shore) for crime and that they are looking into their options there. They are worried that the crime against tourists will start to negatively affect tourism here so they want to take immediate action on the worst spots.
I looked at the website for the Arizona and see that he last ticket/program is at 3 and the park actually closes at 5. It will all depend on how many people decide to go that day if all of the tickets are gone at noon.

FYI-
Just got back from Hawaii last week end and we went and did the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri tours. We arranged for an actual tour through HHV where we were staying after our cruise. We moaned about the fact that the tour was leaving at 6:20 in the morning but later realized why. Tickets were sold out by 11:00 a.m. that day. Our guide explained that sometimes you get lucky and you might still get a ticket at noon but that's not a typical occurrance...they sell out fast. We were in line by 7:15 a.m. and by 8:00 a.m. there was a line down the sidewalk, around the corner and well into the grassy area in front of the memorial entrance...by the time we completed the movie and the trip out to the ship the line was even longer....remember though that a lot of people had already been let into the museum/movie/holding area by that time. If you decide to try and luck is not with you then definately hop over to the USS Missouri....what a neat ship! Just remember not to take any pictures from the bridge as the trolley brings you over to the Missouri. The trolley driver and our tour guide both warned that the military will remove the film from your camera and/or keep your camera especially if it's digital. The USS Missouri though was fantastic and worth the visit too.

We were just there in January but arrived early so I can't help you with ticket availability.

However, as far as security in the parking lot, they now have police officers patrolling on bicycles. There were at least two for the area around the Arizona Memorial site and the USS Bowfin.

Incidently, they are very friendly and very helpful with directions if you need them when you leave.

When I was there last mid-March, our Duck picked us up about 8:00 a.m. and we got to the ticket area about 9:00ish; the movie was at 11:15; on the memorial by about 12.
By the time we got back to the museum area and were on our way out the line definately was llllooooonnnnnngggggggg!!!!!!
Personally if you can't get there before 10, I doubt that you can get tickets or would want to even try.

There are no tangibles but how you taste; and I've never forgotten that.
