spookie2 Posted April 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 4, 2008 Can anyone who has been to Papeete/Bora Bora tell me what kind of local exchange rate they were able to get? One that they felt was a good rate. I realize it changes, but I was just curious.
lilbrd Posted April 4, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 4, 2008 Hi: Spent 15 days in paradise in early march. (10 days on TP) Bought 20,000 XPF at LAX for $293.17 CDN This lasted us most of the trip - for incidentals. Taxi preferred XPF. Places that we used U.S. dollars calculated the exchange rate. Varied from 15% for ice cream cones to 30/35% most other places. Bought soda pop in Bora Bora grocery store where they charged 28%. Used credit card quite extensively. Charges were converted at $1.54 for a Euro and $0.0129 to $0.0132 for an XPF. All Canadian Dollars. All conversions included a 2% conversion fee. I would suggest using $1.30 U.S. to 100 XPF would be very close.
dennbr9 Posted April 5, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2008 The exchange rate yesterday was said to be just over 74 XPF to the US Dollar. Someone else said that Capital One was giving 80 to the dollar. On the Island, the rate could vary some.

With the Canadian Dollar pretty much equal to the US, does not look like a very favorable exchange. Someone said that on 4/3 the Rate internationally was posted at just over 74 to the US Dollar. Wonder if you paid conversion to US and Conversion to XPF? Best rate I heard was to use the ATM at the Papeete Airport, but use your CC for any large purchase. Since we just left on Monday of this week--we found that ATM's gave the best exchange rate--also--charging items at restaurants and hotels--the rate was as low as 63--IC Bora Bora etc--that's why we use local currency-- if you'll be mainly on the cruise and not staying at a hotel for any length of time--this will probably not be the issue for you as it was for us--we had a week to deal with--think we did well !!!-- Nancy:D
