Air Italia and Rome airport

Do you mean Alitalia? If so, yes, several times. We have flown Alitalia into Rome and then taken domestic flights without a problem. There are two sections to Fiumicino, the international terminal and the domestic. You must walk from one to the other. However, there is a shuttle train that takes you from the ticketing/security/shopping area in the internation terminal to the gates where they also have food services, duty free and other shops.

Thanks so much for the reply. If we fly from Athens to Rome, change planes to go to Geneva, will it be all internal or international? Are "golf carts" or failing that if the airport is big and complicated, wheelchair be easily available and reliable?

It should be internal, you should come into the domestic terminal. They do have "golf carts" and/or wheelchairs available at the gate and someone to assist you. You should keep in mind that some flights require taking one of the airport shuttle buses from the plane to the terminal.

You have been very helpful. As long as we don't have to walk far, that is alright! Presumably golf carts or wheelchairs will be waiting close to the point we get on or off the shuttle bus, if we pre-book assistance.

We flew out of FIU on Monday. This was our fourth exit from Rome and the most convoluted (and snafu-rich) by far. Apparently the international terminal is oversubscribed and so an additional space "Terminal 5" is in use for some flights. If perchance your airline/flight is assigned there, you will have to hop a shuttle bus to go there, be processed, go through the security check point there, and then back onto another shuttle bus to return you to the international terminal and your gate area. Hopefully this is only a temporary situation.
