I noticed that many older cruise ships have the tween deck. i never really understood the reasoning or the necesssity for this weird shaped deck on a cruise ship. why was it there? how come tody's ship usually do not have them? just curious

My guess is that "tween deck" results when they want/need higher ceilings in the other part of the deck below in the public areas. Also, they would need more ceiling space to run the much larger airconditioning ducts for the public spaces rather than required for those in the room areas. On the newer ships they probably just run the higher deck from bow to stern at that level and have public spaces on the whole deck.

One of the things I read about Majesty of the Seas is that it is unique in that all the public rooms are towards the back of the ship, while the front of the ship on many decks are located passenger state rooms. The larger the room, the higher the ceiling needs to be in order to avoid "that closed-in feeling." They probably wouldn't have a Tween Deck if they had rearranged the rooms so that decks were either all passenger-cabins or all public rooms, bow to stern.

The Monarch OTS is the same way. The Tween Deck is only in the front portion of the ship because all decks are cabins with the public rooms aft.
