msk68 Posted August 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 28, 2008 Hi, We'll be finishing up our cruise in Athens on November 17th. A friend of mine, who is from Athens, tells me that day is a Greek National holiday and there are marches and 'protests' remembering the day that the students took over the Athens Polytechnic Institute in 1973. My question is, should this deter us from staying a day in Athens? We are planning to stay at the Grande Bretagne right now and I'm really excited about that. However, last time we were in Athens, we stayed right down from the G.B. but still in Syntagma Square and were hemmed in by a political rally that took all evening. Will the same thing be happening on November 17th? Should I just consider skipping Athens altogether? We were planning to leave the afternoon of the 18th Thanks for any advice! Susan-M Posted August 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 28, 2008 A google search brought up this info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athens_Polytechnic_Uprising in which it describes the route that the demonstration takes place (under "Legacy"). Also, the Tripadvisor forum would be a good place to ask about this as there are locals who regularly respond to posts: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g189400-i194-Athens_Attica.html
