Distance from Lima to San Martin, Peru

I'll be flying into Lima, taking a non-ship tour to Machu Picchu and then meeting the ship in San Martin. Does anyone know how far it is from Lima to San Martin or the best way to make the trip? Thanks!

You can fly from Cusco to Tarapoto. Air on LAN is about $425.00pp one way. It is cheaper to buy a RT Lima/Cusco/Lima ticket, then a one way ticket to Tarapoto from Lima. All Peruvian flights to almost anyplace in Peru fly through Lima.
