best place to see the penguins.

We saw penguins in two places on our cruise. Punta Tombo (from Puerto Madryn) was great. Volunteer Point (Falkland Islands) was INCREDIBLE, and the highlight of our cruise too. Both tours were with private operators and we arranged them before the cruise.

This request is a year after your post, but we are going in December 2009. Could you please send me contact information for your tour Falkland Islands/Volunteer Point. My email is siebertcw@aol.com. Thanks

We just returned from HAL Veendam cruise which visited the Falklands November 18. As noted elsewhere on the forums, private tours are hard to come by since the ships’ tours use up all the available drivers. However, we were able to book a private trip to Volunteer Point with Nyree Heathman (email: nyree@horizon.co.fk).

Nyree , her mother and father each drive 4 wheel vehicles to Volunteer Point, which travel in a convey more or less alongside the vehicles used by the ships’ tours, but charge half as much ($US160/person). We booked several months before the trip, but they had room for two more passengers they picked up on the tender dock so you might get lucky, even without a reservation.

The main challenge is getting off the ship early, since you will need about seven hours to make the trip (bumpy, but fun and interesting) and it can take as much as an hour or two to get off the ship. Volunteer Point was the highlight of our cruise – the spectacle of hundreds of King Penguins is amazing – but dress very warmly!!
