Flamingos

Recommended Posts

I think the sanctuary is at Celestun. It's 96 kilometers southwest of Merida, so probably not doable. Add to that 35km Progreso to Merida. There is information in the magazine http://www.yucatantoday.com It's a 2 hour trip by bus each way from Merida. Merida is a great option and only 21 miles from Progreso. 30 minutes. There's lots of information on this board and the Port call at Progreso is best with some research.

I know it's too late for OP, but for future reference, Yes you can see flamingos while in port at Progreso.

Go west to Chelem, it's a great day trip and you can hire a boat (cheap) to take you to the flamingos. Small town, very nice, no tourists.

If you don't have a lot of time go just east of Progreso about 10 miles to an observation platform (free) on the right side of the highway (opposite gulf). You can easily do this in combination with a trip to Merida or Dzibultchan, it's very close. I drove out there twice in 2005.

Of course while at the gas station in Progreso, I looked over to a mud puddle 60+ feet away and standing there was a lone flamingo. So keep your eyes open.
