Safe?

My husband and I are taking our first cruise in less than two weeks. We want to see the Uxmal ruins on our stop at Progresso. We will probably just take the Carnival excursion. Is this a fairly safe area? The hubby and I watched a documentary about Mexican gangs stopping busses and shooting people. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I need some reassurance.

The Yucatan State is very safe. Most of the street cops in Merida don't even seem to carry sidearms. I vacation there every year.

I feel safer in Mexico than I do at home and I carry a gun at home.

The state of Yucatan is known for it's low crime level. Your bus drivers and guides are professionals, who can always get in touch with authorities - and the roads through Merida to Uxmal are as modern as any you would find up north. The main danger I face when driving in Merida is being cut off by the SUV's and BMW's!
