up coming cruise we will have a room joining with friends - the balcony will have a divide i believe -- can that be opened and closed?

It depends on the ship. On the R & S class ships the dividers do not open but on the newest 7 ships (Vista, Signature, Pinnacle classes) a section of the dividers do open. Your room steward will have a tool to do it.
