From the New York Times Travel Section this week, they have this headline: "20 places to travel in your 20s" with these opening/set-up highlights: "There’s no better way to change your perception of the world — and maybe yourself — than travel. You’ll experience different cultures, meet new friends and make lifelong memories. But traveling poses challenges: financial constraints, limited time off. So think of this selection as a checklist and starter kit to world travel."

One top suggestion was for: "Berlin. There are few cities as welcoming for young people as Berlin — affordable, vibrant and friendly, with plenty of English speakers. Fans of contemporary art and beer will be especially pleased. Try Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg as home bases. (The city is also a great hub for getting around Europe, especially with today’s cheap European carriers.)"

It's been a long time since I have been in my 20's, but I started out in December 1970 doing a month-long, six-country Eurorail adventure with a college roommate for doing a large segment of Europe highlights. We enjoyed several stops along the Rhine and doing Munich in 1970, but unfortunately, we have not yet made it to Berlin. It is, however, on our future, priority to-do list. My sense is that Berlin is much difference today and easier to visit than it would have been back in those days when German was still divided. That initial international trip helped to launch my interests for exploring and history/culture learning at an early age.

This NY Times writer only had twenty slots from all of the world to fill. What other Europe or world sites/stars should they have mentioned for those in their 20's to see and experience? Other opinions and viewpoints to share?

Spent some time working in Berlin the early noughties. It's a vibrant, buzzing yet cultural and cerebral city with a fantastic night-life. Checked out some of the other places in the Times' list... Prague - to which I'm pleased that it's emerging from its "lads / stag weekend" tag, is steeped in culture and history (and good beer!). I ate the best seafood I've eaten in Lisbon and fell in love with that city's laid-back vibe.

However, Barcelona is - imo - the gem in that list. We were fortunate to be there during the 150th anniversary celebrations of Gaudi's birth... If you've an artistic and cultural bent (we have) it's Disneyland for adults...
