Anyone rent a car at port Livorno and drop off at different port or airport. I would like take time to visit Florence and spend a night in Rome to get an early start to visit Vatican and Rome before embark back on ship NCL 12 days eastern mediterranean. Any suggestion on renting a car for 2 couples, to get off the ship for the night.

A car is probably the most economical method of transport for four people, but parking it will be a nightmare since you can't drive into either Florence or Rome because of the ZTLs.

It would cost more to use the trains, but I think it would be easier.

If you really want to drive, search Hlitner's posts as I seem to recall there's a hotel he likes in Florence that's outside of the ZTL and offers parking.

For Rome you'd need to look at hotels slightly outside of the center as well and use buses, cabs, or a hotel shuttle to get into town. I'd focus on the area directly west of Vatican City, to put you in the direction of Civitavecchia when you're ready to leave.
