taxman95 Posted May 1, 2006 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2006 We are taking our first cruise this summer in the Mediterranean on Princess. Are all the on ship charges done in $US? Just wondering since I'm a Canadian and have both $C and $US credit cards and tend to buy $US in large amount for our US vacation property. If most of the ship charges are in $US I will buy more now and use the US card on the ship to minimize exchange charges.

cherylandtk Posted May 1, 2006 #3 Share Posted May 1, 2006 On Princess, when you check in, there is a little check box on the Back of the card where they imprint the credit card. Be sure you check this box; it says to keep and process all your charges in US$, otherwise at the end of the cruise Princess automatically converts the US$ dollar charges into your local currency, and of course they do this at a ridiculous conversion rate, which in essence is just a conversion fee. The last thing you want is charges in US$ converted to CDN (by Princess) charged to your US$ card which then has to convert (at a charge) the CDN back to US$! It would also be wise to check at the Pursers desk a couple of days into the cruise to verify that your onboard charges are being processed in US$, just in case they missed the check box mark. barbarah33 Posted May 1, 2006 #4 Share Posted May 1, 2006 Yes, all charges are in US Dollars. I have cruised the Med and everything bought on, or from, the ship was in US currency.
cherylandtk Posted May 2, 2006 #5 Share Posted May 2, 2006 Barbarah: Princess converts the onboard US$ dollar charges to the currency of the country of residence of the passenger. If you are from the US, you will not, obviously, see anything other than US$ charges. But those from other countries, as the OP is, need to check the box on the credit card form to ensure they are in control of the currency exchange rates, rather than Princess.
