Marie-Claude Posted April 1, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2004 We are booked on the STAR Princess for the transatlantic cruise leaving Venice on Oct.7 /04. We want to do a pre-cruise stay; Princess only has 1-night pre-cruise stay left, and the hotel is Ramada San Giuliano, which is on the mainland - bummer... Anyone with comments on this hotel and its location?? How easy and how long to get to Venice?? Thanks!! MC
Mike Andrews Posted April 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Hi MC, The hotel is situated near the bridge that links the mainland with Venice Island,so it should be easy to take a taxi into Piazzale Roma. wwinfl91 Posted April 2, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 2, 2004 I would suggest trying to find a hotel in Venice on your own rather than staying out of the city. One of the best parts of staying in Venice is being able to walk around the city after all the day tourists leave. It seems like a different city then especially in the areas that are especially crowded during the day (i.e. St Marks, Rialto area, etc.). Also doing a waterbus ride up and down the Grand Canal in the early evening as the sun is setting is another experience you may remember for a lifetime. There are a number of sites where you can find Venice hotels. Here is a great general information site on Venice that has on it a number of links to hotels. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/ We stayed at a small family run B&B for 3 days after our cruise and felt we could have stayed another week and still not seen everything we wanted to see. My wife says it gives us a great excuse to go back again some day. The hotel we stayed at which was a real bargin, I felt, at 100 euros a day with breakfast included was the Alloggi Barbaria. Their website is: http://www.alloggibarbaria.it/gbindex.htm It wasn't fancy and wasn't on a canal but it was far enough away from the main tourist areas so we got to sample some of the local flavor of Venice (like shopping in one of little local grocery stores for some soda and wine) but close enough we could get to St Mark's in an easy 15 minute walk. If you have the time plan on staying at least a couple of days in Venice because there really is a lot to see and do and everything seems to take longer than you would think. Hope this helps and have a great cruise. Marie-Claude Posted April 4, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Thank you both for your advices. We booked our flights with Princess as it was a LOT cheaper than booking on our own - but they are charging a ridiculous amount of money for deviation if we want to change the departure date and get to Venice a few days prior to embarkation UNLESS you book a pre-cruise where you have no deviation fee!! I'd much rather stay in the city but I feel a bit trapped in this situation, and I find it hard to believe that their 2-nights pre-cruise is already sold out, 6 months in advance... We'll try to make the best of it! wwinfl91 Posted April 4, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 4, 2004 When we did our Med cruise last year we also booked our air through Princess and had them change our flight home to a later date and the charge then was $75 a person for the change. Even if you decide to not stay in Venice hope you enjoy your time in this fantastic city. Have a great cruise.
