Normandy Beaches & American Cemetery from Cherbourg

We will have 15 hours docked in Cherbourg (Wed. July 8) . There are no ship-sponsored excursions listed at this time. What are the best ways to see the WWII beaches and American Cemetery (and perhaps a related museum or two)?

On the Constellation last year they had tours of the D-Day sites. I suspect they will add them. Our table mates rented a car and had a great day. They also had a Tom Tom GPS with them. For us, we took a ships tour to Mt. Saint Michel. Consider that as well.

We are doing the D Day beaches from Le Havre in November (as we want to the British beaches), but have decided to hire a car in Cherbourg to see the US beaches and the area. We have gone with www.nationalcar.com as their office is only about a 10-15 minute walk from the pier.
