Getty Center from San Pedro?

Recommended Posts

We will be porting in San Pedro on a Sunday in April '15 from 9am - 5 pm. I would love to visit the Getty Center which according to my friend Google is a 30-45 minute drive from the port.

I tried searching on here and got no hits so wondering if anyone has ever done this as an excursion.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately your friend Google isn't a native. Any day, any time of day can have issues with traffic. Sunday is a day when CalTrans likes to work on the roads.

Which one? The one in Pacific Palisades or the one in Brentwood? The one in Brentwood is just south of the 101/405 interchange. That's always horrible from any direction. It's the busiest in the country.

For Brentwood you need to make parking reservations.

The closest rental is Enterprise in the Crown Plaza but you need to check if they are open.

You could get to Brentwood but you'd only have a few hours there.

Walking distance is the USS Iowa. http://www.pacificbattleship.com/

In Long Beach is the Aquarium of the Pacific.

You could try and arrange something with Sun Seeker Tours http://www.sunseekertours.us/

Might be able to set up a group on your Roll Call

The big problem is getting the rental car. You can take a taxi to the aquarium.

You do not have enough time to go over to Catalina.

You might get more help on the West Coast Departure Board. This is a 'step-child'.

  • 2 weeks later...

We live in LA not too far from the Getty Center. It will take you about an hour to hour and half to get to the Getty Center from San Pedro. Sunday morning traffic is normally light. Most of the major CalTrans construction in the area is off the freeway now. You can use the carpool lane if there are more than 2 of you. You do need to get online and make a parking reservation ahead of time.

So you think we could do it?

Yes, but you'll only have a few hours there.

Probably won't get on the road until 10am. Get to the Getty around 11:30.

Need to leave the Getty by 2:00. That will give you 2.5 hours to get lost, sit in traffic for an accident or traffic break, return the car and get back to port before All Aboard at 4:30.

Only you can decide if it is worth going to for under three hours.

I'm more interested in the architecture than in the art so I might be......
