kimala Posted June 7, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2008 My husband dives and I cannot anymore. We would like to find a combination Snorkel/Dive trip so that both of us can go. One more thing, it would have to be an operation that would pick us up at the port as we are arriving via cruise...Thank you for any advice. IBoz Posted June 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 8, 2008 I hope you get an answer to this. I am in a similar situation. DH and DS want to try a "beginner's scuba". I would love to try it too, but cannot because of Meniere's. Also, DD is too young for a diving excursion at this point. So we would LOVE to find an excursion that has scuba and snorkeling together. kimala Posted June 8, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Keep watching the post...hopefully someone will respond. I'm sorry to hear about your ailment, "Menieres" not sure what that is?? I am a certified diver but I can never clear my ear pressure. I always have moderate to severe pain when I dive and the last time I came up with blood in my mask...that was it. Ive been to ear specialists but they say I have small eustation tubes and there is nothing they can do...Bummer! Now I cant be my husbands dive buddy anymore. IBoz Posted June 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Meniere's is an ear problem that can affect one or both ears. The main symptoms are vertigo, hearing loss, feeling pressure in the middle ear, and/or tinnitus. When you have an "attack", the vertigo is so extreme that it frequently causes vomiting. It's diagnosed basically by ruling other things out, like brain tumors or ear infections. Three years ago, I had 6 attacks over a 4 month period, then was diagnosed. I'm quite lucky - my doctor put me on some heavy allergy meds to control the amount of fluid in my sinuses and ears, and I only have the tinnitus and a 20% loss of hearing in the left ear. I have heard of people having frequent attacks of the vertigo, so I can't complain. I haven't had an attack in three years, but you can see why I can't dive. Too much pressure could cause the vertigo, and that would be BAD if under water, or if I got sick to my stomach (or both). My doc says I can continue to snorkle, and I still swim, surf and sail. SeaPA1 Posted June 10, 2008 #8 Share Posted June 10, 2008 Pretty much any dive op on Roatan would be able to accomodate you. Most of the dive sites begin in rather shallow water (20 to 30 feet deep above the reef) with dropoffs at the wall into deeper water. I typically dive with Sueno Del Mar, but any of the shops in West End & West Bay area generally hit the exact same dive sites. they sorta have a gentlemen's agreement to rotate time on the various buoys. You could also consider Cocoview Resort, which has excellent diving and snorkeling from the shore.
