You can go to Nevis on your own. There are several ferries to make the trip every day. The biggest concern is how much time your ship is in port in St Kitts and the timing of your trip over and back. The catamaran trips are not a way to see Nevis. Your catamaran trip take you to Pinney's Beach but there is much more to see on Nevis.

If a ship is in port 8am to 5pm is that enough time to have a few hours on St Kitts AND go to Nevis? How much is the ferry? Thanks so much!

Timing is the issue. The ferry trip takes 45 min each way. The ferry is about $8-10 each way. The earliest ferry you could catch would be the 9 am to Nevis. The schedule should be checked for the return to St Kitts. It is easy to find a taxi at the ferry dock in Nevis.
