Portland Headlight and Museum

That kind of depends on you?. I am an avid photographer and we couldn't wait to get to the Portland Head Light. We were there, not on a cruise, but on our own, touring Maine and the coast. We stopped at about every lighthouse available to the public and the Head Light is about as photogenic as they come. Now others want to visit museums and still others head out to Kennebunkport, and still others want to shop at LL Bean in Freeport. It's up to what you want to see and do.

If you are asking if seeing the Portland Head Light is worth it, I would say a resounding yes. It is not an all day thing and I would think you might spend an hour or so there, but that's about it. As for taking a cab there, I think that might be pretty expensive, but I'm not from there so don't quote me on that.

FYI, you usually can get a pretty good shot of the Head Light from your ship as she sails by it, if you don't want to get up close and personal with it.

And from the ship

As GiantFan (unfortunate sports affiliation) says, it all depends on you. Are you a lighthouse fanatic? Do you like the rocky coastline? Then yes, go see it. Cab fare is $18-22 each way, and you will probably spend about an hour, tops, in Fort Williams Park. It may be cheaper to rent a car from Enterprise, and have them pick you up at the terminal.

There is also the Longfellow House (Henry Wadsworth) in town, the Victorian Mansion, the Art Museum (large collection of Wyeths), and the Portland Observatory to get a view out over Casco Bay. You could even take the Casco Bay Ferry on the mail boat run around all the islands in Casco Bay.

Allagash Brewery has tours, and is downtown. The Great Lost Bear is a nationally known brew pub with over 70 craft brews on tap.

Just walking around the Old Port district is nice, and it's where most of the fine restaurants are. Portland is also a nationally known food destination, and you can get nearly any type of great food.
