sitraveler Posted October 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2014 We've been to Recife several times. We gone to the synagogue but never been able to enter. Does anyone have any info on admission there? We will be there Saturday Nov 15th.
VidaNaPraia Posted October 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Note that the only original construction is a small hole in the main floor that led to what was the Mikva. The rest is newer construction. This article talks a bit about why. http://www.kahalzurisrael.com/en/index.html. The video in an upstairs room is relatively interesting, IMO. Open T-F 9:00-17:00; Sun 15:00-19:00 iirc, with entrance allowed until 1/2 hour before closing, but you can call to check: (81) 3224-2128 Not sure if there are currently Shabbat services in the upstairs prayer room on Friday nights or on Saturdays that are open to the public. sitraveler Posted October 14, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Thank you. On our previous visits it wasn't open. When I realized it was Saturday, I didn't have much hope. There is always the puppet museum down the street.
VidaNaPraia Posted October 14, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Here is some information, in Portuguese, about other Jewish sights in Pernambuco state (where Recife is located). http://www.arquivojudaicope.org.br/2012/pt/rota-judaica.html As far as I know, the Puppet Museum (Museu de Mamulengo) is in Olinda. Could you be thinking of the craft shops in the Casa de Cultura? If museums are your thing, in Recife I'd highly recommend the unique ceramic workshop and sculpture park Olaria Francisco Brennand in the Varzea neighborhood. There is also a sculpture park with some of his works in Recife Velho (the synagogue neighborhood), but the a Olaria is amazing (as you can see on YouTube). sitraveler Posted October 14, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Sorry, what I called the puppets is "Embaixada dos Bonecas Gigantes", its a couple of doors down from the synagogue.
