Pacaya volcano too far from Santo Tomas?

We are visiting Santo Tomas on the Ryndam in December and are looking for an excursion our teens will enjoy. The volcano hike sounds great, but wondering how far away it is. I can't find anything from the port, just Antigua(sp?)

We will be visiting Key West, Mahogany Bay and Costa Maya as well. We can only afford one major excursion. For those experienced cruisers, what would you suggest? It looks like Honduras and Guatemala are not places to plan on just walking into town and sightseeing.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. We are looking into booking Ronys Tours for a tour of Hondurous. Who did you book? What did you visit?

At the time we just did the ship's island tour

Went to the iguana farm, scenic drive to a look-out on top of the hill, a beach but cannot tell you the name but it was not busy, had a restaurant & some shops with local crafts

It was a few years ago before Roatan became cruise central ;)

We used rony's and would NOT recommend it. Driver barely spoke, and you had to pry any local info out of him. When we went on the glass bottom boat tour he sat away from us and provided info to a Spanish speaking couple, not the people paying for his services!

We did enjoy the glass bottom boat tour- saw beautiful fish and coral. Enjoyed the iguana farm, although my son was scared by the wild turkeys! We visited the sandy bay orphanage and it was a wonderful eye opening experience for my kids, and the children there loved meeting visitors, and the school supplies we brought!
