Borobudur

Hi all,

We are sailing on the Sun in a couple of weeks, Flowers of Asia, and one of the ports is Borobudur. We are really excited to be visiting an ancient wonder, however I am a bit confussed as to the respectful dress expected for the temple :confused: Can anyone tell me if long skirts or long pants rule is enforced here? and also, does it apply to both men & women, it's going to be so hot when we are there, don't want to over dress unnecessarily.

There is no port at Borobudur. The nearest main city is Yogyakarta and the coast is about 30 minutes away from there. Borobudur is a great 1000 year old temple and well worth a visit. I went there 30 years ago and you were allowed to climb all over it. I assume they protect it better these days. The whole city of Yogyakarta is worth a visit as it has ancient monuments of Buddhist, Hindu pasts as well as the current Muslim predominance.

We just sailed to Indonesia on HAL (March 2014) and stopped at Semarang. I had arranged an independent tour to Borobudor with http://www.javaindah-tours.com. Mr. Irwan at the company was very expedient in returning emails and the tour was excellent. Borobudor is definitely worth going to see! The driver and guide were right there when we got off the ship (always nerve-wracking) with a sign with my name on it. I would highly recommend them. There were 4 of us and he had a nice private vehicle that only held 4. We did not have a police escort but we did not need one. We also did not stop anywhere for lunch, but we probably could have. (We just took food from the ship to munch on). The traffic was atrocious but we did get to Borobudor before the buses so it was much quieter. We also stopped at a smaller temple - Pawon and at the Luwak coffee house next to the small temple. We left the ship at 9am and were back by 6pm (ship left at 8pm, I believe). The cost for 4 of us was $80 per person. Much better than the over $200 per person for the ship tour. Definately recommend. Another group on the ship (I think they had 10-12) also booked with them.

seem to remember most temples had a ban on shorts/short skirts etc but they would hire/sell "wrap arounds" for about $1.00. I'm going back many many years and all things change but they would definately not let you in if they thought that you were inappropriately dressed i.e. too much bare skin

Take a sarong to wrap around your waist over your shorts, giving the effect of a long skirt.

To answer the question on clothing at the temple, I wore long pants and most of the women had on long pants. Lots of the guys were wearing shorts though. At the entry to Borobudur everyone receives a sarong to wear (which is returned when you leave). That was typical of most of the temples we went to in Java, Bali and Lombok.
