Cape Liberty, Ellis Island hotel

We are arriving at EWR two days before our early October cruise from Cape Liberty. We hope to go to Elllis Island the day before our cruise. We are looking for a good hotel for two nights, convenient to both the ferry at Liberty State Park and also to the cruise terminal. We expect to have to take taxis for our ground transportation since this seems to be the primary alternative.

My husband is a Marriott fan, but there do not seem to be many properties around that would meet this logistical wish.

Would appreciate hotel suggestions as well as any guidance regarding transportation to and from Liberty Park and then our hotel transfer to the port.

The hotels in the Newport area of Jersey City are the closest hotels to both Liberty State Park and the Cruiseport.

Have you considered staying at one of the Marriott prooerties at the airport (and there are many) and renting a car for the day?

Please give us more details? Hotel budget? Exact dates? Only two people? The Marriott Courtyard Jersey City is your best Marriott choice, but it could be pricey. From that location you can take a cab to Liberty State Park, but there is also a light rail, walk 5 blocks, and short ferry option to get to and from Liberty State Park. PATH to World Trade and walk/cab to the SOL /Ellis Island ferry in Manhattan is also an option as well as a combination of both options. Once you are out on either Ellis Island or Liberty Island, you can return to either NY or NJ.

Have you considered staying at one of the many Marriott properties at the airport and renting a car for the day to go to Liberty State Park?

Thanks for the info. There are two of us, arriving on a Friday. Newport area of Jersey City seems to be the area of most interest based on responses and best access. Just didn't want to wind up spending hundreds of dollars in cab fares to get to and from Ellis island and then the port. It seems like going into Manhattan for the ferry might be easier than going to Liberty State Park if we stay in Jersey City. Can anyone confirm that?

We may use points for a hotel or try to keep rate under $200/night including tax, etc.

Other hotel brand suggestions are useful as well. We know it will be a tradeoff between hotel rate/ground transport cost and ease of access. Suggestions welcome and thanks for your response.

Look at the Doubletree and Candlewood Suites in addition to the Courtyard. What are your exact dates? The Westin and the Hyatt are sometimes on Hotwire on weekends for good prices.

I think going to Manhattan for the SOL can be easier if you do it early. Weekend crowds build up in NYC so if you're going later, you can go more on the fly from NJ.

Transportation directions will depend on your hotel. PATH is near the Courtyard, but the World Trade trains don't stop there on weekends - you have to go to Grove St and transfer. Lots if choices - in a way too many choices.
