St Kitts Train Ride Tour

Is this do-able for mobility challenged people? I use a scooter or folding wheelchair, but can take a few steps, or climb maybe two or three steps. We were able to do the one in Skagway, Alaska, and I would love to do the St. Kitts train, but it is not listed as "accessible". Has anyone tried it?

The train will not take w/c or scooter, the bus does pull right up to the train, 3 steps and you are seated downstairs in a/c cabin -- will see lots of uncut sugarcane. It is 2 hours long, others can go upstairs and see more. It is possible. Mixed reactions on the sites -- happy poverty prevails. Vicky:)

The train in Skagway has a handicapped/accessible car, the train in St Kitts does not. You can sit in the lower level but as stated before you will see lot and lots of uncut sugar cane. The views from the top are best but the staircase going up is narrow and winding, my DH who has some slight mobility problems was able to do it but was not comfortable using the staircase while the train was moving. Overall we felt the best part of the train trip was the bus ride back to the port seeing the sights - unnarrated. :eek:

Didn't mean to totally discourage you -- it is what it is! Just best to know what you are in for. Train is old, breaks down and there you are stuck in a field. lol. Two alternatives:

1) Recently had an accessible tour through Celebrity in St. Kitts seeing the island and spending 1.5 hours at Marriot Hotel -- about 2 miles from port (perhaps a $10 taxi ride). Lovely accessible hotel with lovely grounds, and a BIG, modern casino -- ONLY SNAG was casino didn't open until Noon.

2) Private tour -- going to fort (1st level) and batik factory -- doable with scooter/w/c with some motivation (grassy areas, potholes, etc.) Vicki :)

We visited St Kitts in March and did a tour with Pereira Tours. I can manage steps and we took a manual wheelchair. I didn't go up to the fortress, but the driver left me in a place I coudld sit and wait.

we spoke to other passengers who had done the train and they weren't impressed as they didn't see as much of the island as we had. You can only book the trian through the cruise ships, but I wouldn't bother.
