I was so excited too read in the paper this morning the cruise port in salem ma was almost finished. It reported that mid sized ships will dock there. I couldnt be more excited. Salem is a great stop on a new england tour everything Boston has too offer w/ less traffic

FYI: midsized is defined as up to 800 feet long and a maximum capacity of 2,250 people, crew included, which means that among the major cruise lines, the only one that has ships that could dock would be Holland America.

From the Salem, MA website:

Address: 10 Blaney Street, Salem, Massachusetts 01970 USA

Latitude / Longitude: 42°31’ N / 70°42’W

Access: 4.2 Miles (6.8 KM) from Route 128 / Interstate 95

Berthage: Maximum 300 FT (91M)

Berthage Depth: 15 - 26 FT (4.57 - 7.92 M) Dredge

- See more at: http://salem.org/cruiseport/#sthash.6Sv32YN6.dpuf

A maximum length of 300 ft is not going to allow any cruise ships. Some of the coastal cruisers can make it, but not main stream cruise lines.

The Blaney Street wharf is the ferry dock that was refurbished in 2012. The new one is the Footprint dock around the corner and can take up to 800 ft ships, the first being the 650-ft Seaborn Quest which is docking on the 19th: http://www.salemnews.com/news/local_news/article_f0a4b12c-b291-5028-ae76-656484a93d4c.html
