CruisinFinsUp Posted February 18, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2014 Hi, Been reading about beaches trying to decide where to go and would appreciate some help. In the past we've gone to Sand Haven on Runaway bay -- it was barely there Nov 2012 when we were there last, and since is closed up I've heard. Castaway restaurant on Jolly Harbour is closed fall 2013 from what I've read. Where can we direct a taxi to take us to a nice beach (kids are young teens and like to swim / play in the ocean) where there is a place to buy drinks, maybe a snack, and washrooms, and rent chairs / umbrella? Is there anyplace on Dickenson Bay other than the Sandals? We understand the beaches are public, but we do want access to basic amenities. We don't need watersports. Thanks very much! We went to Jolly beach in Nov and had a great time. The water and beach were both great. There were chairs and umbrellas to rent and also jet skiis etc. It had everything we wanted and cant wait to go there again!!
seashinesunshine Posted February 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 22, 2014 Fort James beach is wonderful! At one end is a place to eat, rent chairs, a small shop etc. At the other end are the ruins of Fort James, no one is doing anything with them so you are free to roam around. We have been there twice and it is not crowded at all. The surf is fairly gentle so it's a great swimming beach, sandy way out. No coral or rocks though so the snorkeling isn't the best. I will post a few short video clips to show you what it is like. The videos are pretty shaky, they were taken on my small underwater camera and I had it on the underwater settings, so it could be better.

Dickenson does have more than Sandals. We spend our day at Tony's. It was a typical beach bar, standard drinks, chairs umbrellas and restrooms. What wasn't standard was the food they cook. I would go back just for the food!

MDSue Posted March 2, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 2, 2014 Valley Church Beach is another good option. It has everything you are looking for and is a nice beach. We paid $8 each way in a group taxi to get to and from. The main tour booth located as you walk off the dock can hook you up with a taxi to where you want to go and there are plenty of cabs waiting to bring you back when ready.
