Has anyone done this? How expensive is it?

My dad gave me as some money cuz he wants me to purchase some Italian wines n have them shipped to California. If it's not too bad I may have to send some home for me too! :) oooh and maybe some from Greece too! Haha.

You cannot ship wine by US Mail. Therefor you would need t find a FedEx office. Which port do you want to spend the day getting wine then getting it to a FedEx office?

Call FedEx and they cab tell you the cost. Most likely cost would be about $300 from Rome to Wisconsin according to the FedEx Web site.

You can some good Italian wine in the USA for $300.

Most of the wineries will ship your wine for you. Several people on our wine tour had cases sent to their respective homes all over North America, so I can't imagine the cost would be that high. The wines themselves were anywhere from 10-16euros per bottle so I can't imagine the cost to ship it would be more than the wine itself. If you go online to Tuscan Wineries there are several that have email addresses that you could ask the question of average cost to ship.

You need to do your homework because many wines you would buy and ship from Italy will cost you more then buying the same wine in CA. So you would certainly want to focus on some wines that are not available in CA. I believe the shipping cost is normally about 100 Euros per case. But even this gets a bit complicated because technically you are supposed to be a licensed distributor to ship alcohol from Italy to the US. Some of the shippers like DHL used to have ways around this rule, but not sure of the current situation.

Make sure CA is a "legal" State that you can ship wine to...some States are not. I think CA is legal. If the wine is something you can buy here in the US you will just be wasting money buying it over there as you will pay a lot more.Only wine they do not sell outside the winery as it was/is a special batch would shipping be worht it,and then the wine will cost you for sure. There are some wine shops that will ship wine, but again if you can buy it here...One thing to be aware of as well, is the cabernet wines need to be put down as they are not ready to drink for a few years. My DH was a collector of wines and I have had a lot of experience with just this sort of thing. It is not likw running to thw wine shop here when you buy wines abroad trust me.

Any reputable European wine producer will be able to ship the wine to you. However, unless you are buying expensive or specialist wines I can't see the point. You say you live in California, so you already live in a wine producing area. I travel all over Europe on a regular basis and whilst there drink local wines. However, I never bring them back as I can't be bothered for the amount of money I would save. I do regularly go to France to stock up on every day ones as they are much cheaper than in the UK and it makes a nice weekend away.

IMHO it would be better to spend your money on something to remember your holiday. Maybe a piece of jewellery or some kind of memento.

i guess I will have to make better notes of what wines I find over there and then do some hunting over here for them. Trust me in the rural area I live in there isnt much of a selection of good wines.

BTW, I live in Wisconsin. My dad is the one in California. Ill just have to tell him to go find his own good wines! :o lol :D:p
