Pomai Posted July 29, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2014 I need some help. We will be on the Celebrity Solstice and at Akaroa on December 31, 2014. We want to do the ship excursion, CHRISTCHURCH ON YOUR OWN, leaves at 9:30 am and returns at 4:30 pm, leaving us between 11am-3pm (4 hrs). 1) Drop off location is near Hagley Park. 2) Want to See: shops made out of containers in the city. 3) Want to Visit: The International Antarctic Centre. (They have a shuttle from the museum, Rolleston Ave to the center). 4) Is this close to where we get dropped off (Hagley Park). 5) Does anyone know how long it takes to get the the Antarctic Center. 6) Is there taxi's in Christchurch city to take us there and back if need be. Another tour is the CHRISTCHURCH'S ANTARCTIC AND AVIATION EXPERIENCE. This goes to the Antarctic center, but it doesn't say if it goes to the town with the container shopping. Anyone know if it does? Not sure what to do. Would appreciate any help!
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted July 29, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2014 The Antarctic Centre is about 20 minutes from the CBD. It's out by the airport. Rolleston Avenue is where the Visitor Information Centre is, on the edge of Hagley Park, and is probably where your tour will drop you off. But as a last resort you should be able to get a taxi there without any problems. The Antarctic Centre is great. Really worth going to. The container shopping area is less than 1km from the Info Centre - about a 10 minute walk.

Your bus to Christchurch will drop you by the Museum/Botanic Gardens/Hagley Park in Rolleston Ave. From there, it is a 5-10min walk to the Re-Start mall (container shops). The Antarctic Centre has a free shuttle which also departs from outside the Museum in Rolleston Ave on the hour every hour for the attraction and takes about 20 minutes to get there. It returns on the half hour, or you can take a taxi either way. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours at the Antarctic Centre, there is a lot to see and do there. The Airforce Museum is in Sockburn (20 mins drive in another direction) so tours combining those two attractions may not have time to also include the city re-start container mall. Would I be able to get from the Rolleston Ave drop off point to the Orana Wildlife Park?
